TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUE TO MAKE A FINNISH RYIJY (RUG)

MAKING OF RUG IN A LOOM OR A FRAME
BY WEAVING AND KNOTTING

 


1. Rug pile is cut.
You can cut pile of same length
with for example this kind of help.
Strip of cardboard can be used too.


2. You can assort pile yarns as in image.
Usually one pile consists of 3-5 yarns.
Pile can also consist of many colours.



3. Knot the pile yarns to warp treads
with so called Turkish (Ghiordes) knot.
4. Turkish (Ghiordes) knot.

5. In Turkish knot the yarns passes two warp yarns and then...
6. ...the heads are brought to the front side.
Finally it is tightened.

7. Weave some basecloth before to make the next row.
